The Department of Public Safety is responsible for the protection of the real and personal property of the Town and the maintenance of order on the real properties of the Town.
The uniformed Public Safety Officers patrol the properties of the Town on foot, on bicycle and in patrol vehicles. Officers are trained in first aid, traffic control, rescue operations, and fire safety techniques. The Department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Public Safety also provides services such as safety courses for applicants for peddler's licenses and provides a speaker's bureau that lectures on security and safety to local, civic and fraternal organizations. Hempstead Town's certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are available to inspect and properly install child car safety seats. Click here for more information.
While providing 24 hour a day security at Town facilities, the Department also maintains and acts as a central communications network during weather emergencies and/or disasters, such as hurricanes and snowstorms. This communications system networks with our local law enforcement agencies and all local governmental agencies, providing our residents with a constant source of vital emergency services.
In addition, the Department has also established a new Bike Patrol Division that allows for greater Public Safety presence in parking lots, park tot areas, playgrounds, and various other Town facilities.
