Adventure Tours

Tour cultural, historical and recreational attractions. Share special sites and memorable moments with friends and fellow "adventurers." You must be 18 years of age or older to participate. Please wear comfortable shoes on all trips, there will be a lot of walking. Bring a camera to capture those incredible sights. Adventure Tours are open to TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD residents only. Tours leave from the Merrick Road Park Golf Course in Merrick, located one traffic light east of the Meadowbrook Parkway. Call (516) 292-9000, ext. 7258 for tour information.

Registration Policy: MAIL-IN ONLY! First-come, first-served! Buses are filled in the order we receive payments. Sorry, we cannot reserve bus seats. Enclose a separate check or money order for each trip made payable to Town of Hempstead and send along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Department of Parks and Recreation, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, NY 11550, Attn: Adventure Tours. Please include your phone number and the name of the trip on your check. No more than two reservations per person. Sorry, NO REFUNDS. All tours are held rain or shine. Return times are approximate.


West Point and Dia Beacon Perfect Tour on Flag Day

We arrive at the Dia Art Museum for a guided tour. This site is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country. The former Nabisco box printing company has been re-purposed for dynamic contemporary art. After our guided tour, we head down to the waterfront.

Explore and enjoy lunch on your own and a view of the Hudson. Then we are off to visit West Point. A guided tour, in the comfort of your seat on the coach, is narrated by a West Point expert. We may do some walking to the chapel or cemetery or perhaps see a piece of the chain used during the Revolution. After the tour, we allow time to visit the newly completed visitor’s center with much to enjoy before heading home.

NYC View from the Water to Land
Tuesday July 17, 2018- CLOSED
Depart 8:15 AM – 7:30 (APPROX)           

“Bateau” is the French word for boat, and today our “Bateau” is cruising a NYC Harbor. Relax on board a European-inspired, all-glass vessel of daytime splendor. For two hours we are on the water enjoying the view of magnificent New York skyline. While cruising, we enjoy a plated three course lunch at sea.

Disembarking we now head to the meatpacking District visited by 5 million folks annually! Two major attractions await discovery.

Stroll Chelsea Market, the former Nabisco factory and birthplace of the “Oreo” cookie now one of the most exciting tourist attractions. Explore, eat, drink, shop and discover.  Step out doors and take some time to discover an elevated outdoor view of NYC from the famous “High Line.”  Amazing transformations have taken place. From an elevated railroad to an elevated park the transformation must be viewed by walking.

Sated now by overwhelming sights, sound and tastes we head home after a full day adventure.

LI Tour- Gardens on Land/ Lighthouses on Water.

DEPART. 9:00 AM -8:00 PM (approx.)

Plants have always been an important part of LI agriculture, from the tiniest clover, to the larger fly eating carnivores.  Our first stop will be as special as the plants grown here.  With a detailed talk about carnivorous plants you will become a more knowledgeable gardener.  

We then travel along the North Fork of LI to make another farm stop and check out the August vegetables.   We continue on to Greenport where you have free time for lunch, strolling and people watching or have fun riding the carousel. We suggest you pick up a snack for later in the day.

Then it is “All Aboard” at 4:00 as we meet our captain  who takes us out on the water to see up close a few of the famous Lighthouses of Long Island. Bring your cameras and of course, your proper boat shoes, to capture some great pictures up close. Head home, knowing even more about our beautiful Island.

THEN & NOW AROUND PRINCETON,  NJ

Where is the 4th oldest college in the US?  Where is the 3rd largest chapel in the world? Hint… Einstein, Oppenheimer and other great Americans visited or lived here and so will you!   We make our first stop in Princeton, NJ.  Enjoy walking while learning much more about our neighboring state. We will explore the Art Museum and gift shop before discovering even more.  We will pick up our bagged lunch at this site. Enjoy it sitting inside at either of the two cafes or you might want to eat outside on the grounds. (Weather permitting).

Walk among Over 270 large-scale contemporary sculptures outdoors” and don't forget to see the indoor Marilyn Monroe! Your choice to walk inside or outside! Do wear your comfy walking shoes and bring an umbrella to keep away rain on our tour today.
