Must I pay to enter the pool when my child is enrolled in swimming lessons?

Parents of children under 10 years of age who are participating in swimming and diving lessons, swim team and dive practices are required to accompany the child into the pool area. Please be advised that if you come in street clothes and leave with your child immediately after the lesson, you will not be required to pay the daily admission. In the event that you decide to wear bathing attire (underneath street clothes) it will be assumed that you are remaining and it will be necessary for you to pay the fee.

If I sign up my child for Session 1 swim lessons, am I automatically enrolled for Session 2?

No, you must sign your child up for each session and you must bring your proof of age and residency with you to each registration.

Should I work with my child beyond swimming lessons?

Yes, similar to schoolwork, with more practice your child will improve their skills.

Are lessons still held when there is inclement weather?

Yes, lessons are only cancelled in the event of thunder and lighting. If you have questions, please call the pool where your child takes his or her lessons.

Can I sign up my friend's child?

No, you may only sign up children in your own family.

What do I have to bring to registration?

You must bring proof of age and proof of residency for each registrant and payment. We accept checks or money orders only made payable to The Town of Hempstead.

Do you have make-up classes?

No, we do not offer make up swimming lessons.

Are there female and male instructors?

Yes, we have both males and female instructors in our Learn to Swim program.

What certifications do the instructors hold?

All of the Town of Hempstead instructors are American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, as well as certified in CPR/AED, First Aid and also certified by the Nassau County Health Department as Lifeguards.

Do you offer Adult lessons?

Yes, we offer adult swimming lessons during all of Learn to Swim Sessions.

Do you sell bathing suits, goggle, bathing caps, towels, etc.?

No, we do not sell any equipment or clothing. Please supply your own.

To participate in swimming lessons, all children must be at least six years of age and measure 46 inches in height. Parents or guardians must accompany children, younger than 10 years of age to registration and all classes. For Lifeguard Training participants must be 15 years of age, for Junior Lifeguarding 11 – 14 years of age. Classes meet once a week. Class schedules are available at registration. All participants must hold a pool membership or will be required to pay the daily admission rate. Proof of age and residency are required at time of registration. Swim classes must have a minimum of six persons to be held. Class sizes are limited. Skilled instruction will be offered on the following levels:

  • Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
  • Level 3 - Stroke Development
  • Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
  • Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
  • Level 6 - Swimming & Skill Proficiency
  • Junior Lifeguarding - 11 to 14 years of age
  • Lifeguard Training - 15 years of age and up


The Aquatic Division offers a unique screening program for certified and non-certified lifeguard candidates, 16 years of age and over. The screening program will evaluate candidates in a 200-yard swim and interview those who wish to apply for a job with the town. Employment is not guaranteed. Lifeguard candidates, ages 16 and up, are invited to visit Echo Park Saturdays from May 5 to May 19 beginning at 7 a.m.  Bring all of your certification cards. Fee: None

Program: Saturdays, from May 5 to May 19. Program held at Echo Park Pool, West Hempstead

Saturdays: 7 to 9:30 a.m.

Participants, eight years of age and over, can learn the techniques of springboard diving. Experienced diving coaches will conduct weekly classes at Echo Park. Classes include adults and children. All participants must be able to swim in deep water. Each class is limited to 15 divers.

The Lifeguard Training class is open to Town of Hempstead residents as well as non-residents.

Pre-course Skills Test

All candidates will have two attempts at the pre-skill test.

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water.
      (Swim goggles are not allowed.)
    2. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance underwater.
    4. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Fee Information

Fees are collected after successful completion of the pre-course session.

Please make two checks or money orders ONLY in the amount of:

  • One check or money order payable to the Town of Hempstead for $74.00
  • One check or money order payable to the Town of Hempstead for $63.00
  • The third fee will be an online payment of $35.00 made to the American Red Cross after the pre-test is passed. Instructors will give directions on how the process the payment. 

The TOTAL cost of the Lifeguard Training course is $172.00, which includes the course fee to the Town of Hempstead, certification fee to the American Red Cross, and book and material fees. Fees are collected after successful completion of the pre-course session.
