The Overseers of the Poor Series is arranged topically, alphabetically (where appropriate), and chronologically and consists of 9 sub-series: Bonds and Related (1862-1919); Reports [Overseers - 1890-1906; Physicians - 1894-1896; Committee - 1894-1913]; Appropriations (1858-1905); Financial Related (1878-1907); Extended Relief (1893-1908); Legal Matters (1885-1912); Almshouse/Poor House (1894-1952); and Directives/Proceedings (1875-1938).

Historical Notes:

The First notation of the Town of Hempstead providing assistance to the poor of the Town is found in Town Records, Volume 1, p. 457. -- "At a meeting of the Justices, Church Warden, and Vestry on April 27, 1705, it was ordered that there should be added to the minister's rate, for this present year, ten pounds, for the use of the poor. This by order."

The first mention of an official Overseer of the Poor is found in the Indentures/Town Meetings - 1788-1797/1784-1856 volume, p. 3. -- "At a Town Meeting held in the Town Spot of South Hempstead on the 13th day of April 1784, ... the undernamed Persons were elected and chosen Town Officers for the ensuing year. ... Richard Jackson, Overseer of the Poor."

According to Chapter 565 of the Laws of 1929, the Office of Overseers of the Poor was abolished provided for the establishment of a Town Welfare Officer. Excerpted from Town Board Meeting, December 3, 1929, p.245, Outside Records, Vol. 29, October 23, 1928 - October 21, 1930.
