Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Bruce Blakeman are happy to announce that the New York Rising Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Funding has approved the Town of Hempstead’s request for $500,000 in funding to purchase two generators for use at the Meadowmere Park Fire Department. Although over two years have passed since Superstorm Sandy devastated areas throughout the Town of Hempstead, for communities affected, the rebuilding process continues.
The New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program was created to provide additional rebuilding and revitalization assistance to Communities severely damaged by Hurricanes Sandy and Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. There are six communities within the Town of Hempstead that have been recognized as the most affected communities within the state of New York. The Town of Hempstead has filed the claim on behalf of the Meadowmere Park Fire Department.
This project would provide back up power to a critically important emergency response center in the event of future storms and other disasters. The generators will be capable of providing 200kW of backup power.
“Hempstead Town has been aggressive in pursuing aid to mitigate additional financial impact for residents who have been tragically victimized by Hurricane Sandy,” stated Supervisor Murray. “We wanted to make sure that the cost of these projects did not fall directly on the taxpayers, and the New York Rising Community Reconstruction program has made that possible.”
Meadowmere was one of the communities hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy and the Fire Department was the lifeline for neighbors whose homes were slammed by the superstorm.
“Partnering with Hempstead Town to secure the generators for our fire department has been important in the rebuilding process since Sandy,” stated Meadowmere Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Carrero. “These generators will have a tremendous and positive impact on our emergency preparedness.”
“We are thrilled that the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program has responded to our request for generators,” said Councilman Blakeman. “In case of another horrible storm, the Meadowmere Park Fire Department will be prepared.”
