While enjoying their “golden years,” senior citizens may also face stressful challenges often related to isolation, medical problems, and/or losing a spouse or loved one. Lending a hand to mature residents, Hempstead Town, in conjunction with the Long Island Crisis Center, is hosting free workshops entitled, “Putting Together the Pieces for a Happy Life.” The workshops will focus on these unique challenges and provide seniors with important information on how they can receive help.
“I am pleased that once again the Long Island Crisis Center is offering these free workshops at our senior centers. Golden-aged residents can benefit greatly from knowing the warning signs of depression and how they can get assistance in their times of need,” Murray said.
During the 30-minute workshops, presenters from the Long Island Crisis Center will discuss challenges that senior citizens face, how they can recognize when they need help and how to obtain the help they need. Upon the workshop’s conclusion, attendees will have an opportunity to ask individual questions to the presenter and learn how they can receive help for their specific concerns.
“We are thrilled that the Town of Hempstead is taking a lead on bringing crisis intervention and suicide prevention to the community’s senior citizens,” said Linda Leonard, Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center. “National suicide rates for the 65+ population have historically always been the highest among all age groups. I am encouraged that we can make a positive impact locally by getting direct access to this vulnerable population through the Town’s partnership with us.”
The Long Island Crisis Center, located at 2740 Martin Avenue in Bellmore, is Nassau County’s only 24/7 crisis intervention and referral center. For more than four decades, the organization has offered free, confidential, anonymous, and non-judgmental services to Long Islanders of all ages.
