In one of his first actions as the head of America’s largest township, Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that he will be waiving Building Department permit fees for residents who are continuing to repair and reconstruct their homes in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.  Working with the Supervisor, Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad is administering her office’s waiving of fees for replacement documents such as birth certificates and marriage licenses. The fee waivers will be in effect through June 30, 2016.

“As a longtime resident of East Rockaway, I witnessed firsthand Sandy’s devastation of local houses, businesses and properties,” stated Santino. “Just as the Town of Hempstead was on the front lines of the cleanup and recovery effort in late 2012, we will continue to assist residents who are still struggling today to rebuild their homes and their lives.”

In the Building Department, all town fees are waived for Sandy-related structural repairs that conform to original dimensions and specifications, commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs/replacement. Residents of incorporated villages should check requirements of their local villages.  All town fees have been waived for temporary housing trailers and storage pods during construction. ThroughJune 30, 2016, structural work on buildings will be permitted on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 10 AM and 6 PM in addition to the regular construction hours of 7 AM and 6 PM, Monday through Friday.

In the Office of the Town Clerk, residents who lost important documents during Superstorm Sandy including birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses and passports, will not have to pay the town fees for replacement copies.

“I am pleased to work with the Supervisor to help residents who have been slammed by Superstorm Sandy,” said Ahmad.  “Many families lost valuable documents to the flood waters, and I encourage neighbors to visit the Town Clerk’s Office to replace vital records at no cost today.”

Although no appointments are required for residents who plan to visit the Building Department on Sandy-related business, residents are encouraged to call ahead of time to (516) 812-3073 to minimize waiting times. Neighbors can contact the Office of the Town Clerk at (516) 489-5000 ext. 3046.

“The Town of Hempstead is committed to helping residents rebuild homes and livelihoods that were devastated by Superstorm Sandy,” stated Santino. “These fee waivers will go a long way in assisting local families.”
