The Town of Hempstead and Long Island Cares are teaming up to provide assistance to pet owners who are struggling with the cost of pet food. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that the town will be setting up several collection boxes in our area, and residents are encouraged to participate by donating bags of food. The food will be distributed, free of charge, to pet owners in need.

“Some pet owners are forced to surrender their pets due to an inability to pay for food,” stated Supervisor Santino. “By working together with Long Island Cares, the town is able to assist pet owners in need by providing free food to help keep pets together with their families.”

“We’re very proud to be working with Supervisor Santino and the Hempstead Town Council to support their pet food drive to support Baxter’s Pet Pantry,” said Paule Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. “Many families that struggle to put food on their table also struggle to feed their family pet if they have one and this is an opportunity to help families in need keep their pets at home where they belong as opposed to placing them in shelters because they can’t afford pet food.”

Collection boxes will be stationed at the following locations:

  • Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead)
  • Hempstead Tax Office (200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead)
  • Hempstead Town Animal Shelter (3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh)
  • Echo Park (399 Nassau Boulevard, West Hempstead)
  • Newbridge Arena (600 South Newbridge Road, Bellmore)
  • Levittown Hall (Levittown Parkway, Hicksville)
  • Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse (2550 Clubhouse Road, Merrick)
  • Rock Hall Museum (199 Broadway, Lawrence)

The collection drive ends on April 30th. Pet owners looking to register for the program and receive collected food should call Long Island Cares at (631) 582-3663, ext. 113.
