Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Councilman Gary Hudes recently met with Merrick residents Rachel and Brett Roslow to discuss their plans to open Sensory Beans, a special-needs gym in the Bellmore-Merrick area.  The non-profit parent-facilitated, open-play sensory gym is still an evolving idea which stemmed from the Roslow’s personal experience with their son’s autism.

“I commend the Roslows for their dedication to establish Sensory Beans for autistic children,” stated Supervisor Santino.  “All children should have a fun and safe place to play, and Sensory Beans will be a perfect, friendly environment for children of all ages with special needs to play together and learn at the same time.”

Since last August, Sensory Beans has been holding fundraisers throughout the community to assist with occupying a safe space in the community and to purchase special gym equipment recommended by an occupational therapist.  There will be two separate play areas for younger and older children.  “I want a judgment-free zone as much as an educational and fun environment for all kids with special needs,” noted Rachel.

Sensory Beans is hosting an event at Alex and Ani in Roosevelt Field Mall on June 7th from 6 to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and 15% of all purchases will go directly to Sensory Beans.

“This is the perfect opportunity to purchase graduation gifts and end of the year teacher gifts while supporting a worthwhile cause,” stated Councilman Hudes.

In addition, Sensory Beans will be holding a Casino Night on Saturday July 30, 2016 from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. at the Empire Hose Company located at 2300 Merrick Avenue in Merrick.  Tickets include playing chips, refreshments and hors d’oeuvres.  All proceeds go directly to Sensory Beans.  For more information on purchasing tickets, please call (516)308-1462 or visit www.sensorybeans.org.
