Responding to steamy and hot weather, forecast to stretch through Friday, July 8th, Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that the Town of Hempstead will open 15 cooling centers and extend operating hours at ten pools and eight beaches to help keep residents safe and healthy.
“Real health risks exist for residents who don’t have air conditioning or a cool place to stay during this stretch of hot and humid weather,” stated Santino. “By opening 15 cooling centers and extending pool and beach hours, we’re helping neighbors beat the heat and avoid health issues associated with soaring temperatures and high humidity.”
Cooling centers are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., commencing Wednesday, July 6th through Friday, July 8th:

Hours of operation will be extended at the following pools on Wednesday, July 6th, Thursday, July 7th and Friday, July 8th:

-- Blue Grass Lane Pool- Closing at 8 p.m.

Lifeguards will be on duty for an extra hour (until 7 p.m.) at the following beaches on Wednesday, July 6th, Thursday, July 7th and Friday, July 8th:

Santino also offered residents important tips on how to stay cool and be safe during the scorching heat.
-- Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
-- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, usually between 11AM and 4PM. Consider performing these tasks in the early morning or evening hours.
-- When in the sun, wear sunscreen and a hat to protect your face and head.
-- Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
-- Eat well balanced, light and regular meals.
-- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes.
-- NEVER leave children or pets in closed vehicles.
-- Check on elderly family members, friends and neighbors.
-- When indoors, use an air conditioner or fans to cool rooms if available.
-- Cool down with repeated cool baths or showers.
-- Consider going to public pools and air-conditioned stores and malls.
-- Seniors and others who may be sensitive to extreme heat should contact friends, neighbors or relatives at least twice a day during a heat wave.
-- Seek help if you feel symptoms of heat-related illness.
-- Find a cooling center.
