Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino invites residents to say goodbye to weeks of waiting for building permits, and jump to the front of the line when it comes to acquiring basic building permits for work such as a backyard fence, above ground pool or bathroom remodel. The Town of Hempstead Building Department will feature a new Express Permit Window for residents looking to get to work on certain home improvements more quickly. The new window will allow certain basic permits to be processed in an expedited time frame for a fee, enabling homeowners to grab a hammer and nail to start working on their house right away. The Supervisor was joined by Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.
“Paperwork and processing of building permit applications can take many necessary hours,” stated Santino. “Some permits do not require extensive review but are still required to go through important procedural steps. We found a solution to expedite this process for many types of permits while still adhering to all safety precautions, saving our residents valuable time.”
With the new Express Window, residents can be assured that their permit will be reviewed and processed within three business days. At the same time, workload volume will determine the availability of express permit service and which specific types of improvements are being accepted for express service at any given time. Some of the permits that qualify for the Express Window include home improvements such as kitchens, solar panels, detached garages, above ground pools, decks, generators, air conditioners, fences and more. Permits that do not qualify include large-scale renovations such as house expansions, major construction projects, and demolitions.
“Making improvements to homes improves the quality of life for the homeowner, boosts the economy, and especially impacts the community,” said Goosby. “The faster the permits are reviewed and accepted, the faster the homeowner can make these beneficial changes.”
“An Express Permit Window is a great way to effectively knock out basic permit applications,” commented D’Esposito. “We are inviting all of our residents to take advantage of this opportunity and get a jump start on their next home project.”
The Town of Hempstead Building Department processed over 10,000 applications last year. A host of these permits can be serviced through the Express Window. This will help bolster efficiency by prioritizing the processing queue and opening up more resources for the department to utilize.
“We are excited to announce the opening of the Express Window in the Building Department and are always striving to provide quicker, more effective means of service” concluded Santino.
