Supervisor Anthony J. Santino has announced that the Town of Hempstead’s Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area has been named the Best Environmental Organization on Long Island in the 2017 “Bethpage Best of L.I.,” presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. A testament to its popularity island-wide, residents from across Long Island voted for the Marine Nature Study Area over many other similar locations.
“The Town of Hempstead takes great pride in the beautiful ecological preserve that is the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area,” stated Santino. “We are proud that residents across Long Island have supported this community resource, and we are grateful to Bethpage Federal Credit Union for helping to spread the word about this great family destination.”
The Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area is a 52-acre preserve devoted to environmental education and natural history. The location features a marine and estuarine ecosystem that includes marine, insect and plant life, as well as more than 200 species of birds. The preserve has been an invaluable resource for local schools, scouts, nature enthusiasts and families.
In recent years, the Town of Hempstead has worked hard to restore the Marine Nature Study Area in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The revitalization includes a new boardwalk and classroom and the restoration of display areas, fly boxes, fencing, trails, bridges and much more.
“We encourage residents, especially students, to continue to visit and support the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area,” concluded Santino.
