Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito have recently announced upcoming renovations to the Robert F. Garrison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3350 in East Rockaway. Through federal funding secured by the Department of Planning and Economic Development, Hempstead Town will upgrade the current restrooms at the lodge to be ADA compliant.
“This country owes a great deal of gratitude to all our veterans, and the Town of Hempstead is always looking for ways to show our immense appreciation for the sacrifices they made,” said Santino. “By upgrading the post’s restrooms to be ADA compliant, we are helping brave men and women who have defended our nation’s freedom.”
The remodeling will follow all of the latest ADA requirements including proper stall spacing, handrails, and toilet and sink height. The VFW building will also be extended an extra four feet to accommodate for the appropriate width being added to both the men’s and women’s rooms.
“Our veterans have done so much for us,” stated D’Esposito. “Now it’s our turn to pay them back.”
Three years ago, Supervisor Santino assisted with securing funding for the installation of a handicapped-accessible ramp at the East Rockaway American Legion, just a block down the road from the VFW.
RCX Construction will perform the installation. The total cost of the project is $85,750. The funding was received through the Community Development Block Grant Program.
“The East Rockaway VFW has been a staple in the community for over 80 years,” concluded Santino. “I’m excited to see all the positivity and benefits that this project will bring our veterans.”
