Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and the Hempstead Town Board gave the Nassau Kings Basketball team a huge “assist” to make sure they can keep on scoring in the form of a $10,000 grant. The funding will provide the Kings with specialized sports wheelchairs, uniforms, basketballs and other items the players need to participate in its wheelchair basketball program. The Kings are a non-profit organization founded in 1987 to provide an outlet for physically challenged individuals and to raise awareness of the different opportunities available to them.

“This group of men and women embody what sports and community service are all about,” said Santino. “Their commitment to teamwork and assisting each other improves the quality of life for entire communities and deserves our full support. The Town of Hempstead is honored to be able to provide assistance to this amazing group.”

The Kings, who rank first in their division in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, play at Nassau Community College and at the Yes We Can Community Center. Their mission is to promote wellness, and empower physically challenged individuals by improving their physical and social opportunities through sports.

“The Kings are truly inspiring and prove that anyone can do whatever they put their mind to,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.

“Providing the Kings with this grant was a ‘slam dunk’ as we at Hempstead Town are proud of the life-enhancing work that the King’s program performs on and off the court,” concluded Santino.
