Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad today presented a citation and a “key to the town” to Eddie Schellens, a Franklin Square resident who rescued a senior citizen who was trapped in deep snow during a major winter storm on February 9th.
Santino was joined by Assemblyman Ed Ra to make the special presentation to Schellens at Town Hall.
“We’re proud to present Eddie Schellens with a key to the town for his heroic efforts,” Santino said. “Thanks to Eddie’s swift actions, this man was brought to safety from what was a dangerous situation during a major snowstorm.
“Eddie is a humble, unsung hero who deserves recognition for his courageous deed,” Ahmad added.
In the midst of frigid temperatures and snowy conditions, at about 11:30PM on February 9th, Schellens was driving home and heard someone calling for help. At first, Schellens did not see anyone in distress. He decided to turn his vehicle around to investigate and see where the call was coming from.
When he drove up a hill, he saw a hand raised up from the snow. Eddie got out of his car and saw the man struggling on the ground in several inches of snow. The man, whose leg was noticeably broken, was trembling from the freezing temperatures. Eddie immediately called 911. While they waited for first responders to arrive, Eddie gave the man his jacket and gloves to warm up from the frigid conditions.
“As a Franklin Square native, I’m especially proud to salute a neighbor for his efforts in rescuing a fellow member of the community,” Ra said. “Eddie’s sharp instincts led him to help a man in need and bring him to safety.”
“Thank you to Eddie Schellens for his brave actions during a ferocious snowstorm,” Santino said. “Eddie’s courage and caring attitude guided him to help a fellow neighbor in need and we congratulate him.”
