Marine 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi, who lost his life commanding a tank unit in the Iraqi desert 11 years ago, was a hometown boy from Garden City who cherished his time surfing the waves at Lido West Town Park. Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and the Ace in the Hole Foundation will be at that same beach on Saturday, May 13th to honor the fallen hero during the 8th Annual Beach Run & Walk Fundraiser at Lido West.

The two-mile charity beach walk/run begins at 11 a.m. with an opening ceremony to start at approximately 10:30 a.m.

“We’re proud to welcome the LiCalzi family back to Lido West Town Park, along with Michael’s friends, admirers and fellow Marines, to salute his heroism and support his foundation that provides assistance to fellow heroes and other charitable causes,” Santino said.  “There is no better place than Lido West to honor the memory of 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi. He spent so many wonderful moments enjoying the sand and surf with his family and friends.”

The Ace in the Hole Foundation, created in Michael’s memory, provides financial aid, material assistance and other help to charitable organizations and causes, with particular emphasis given to the support of Marine tankers. “Ace in the Hole” is the slogan for the 2nd Tank Battalion, in which Michael heroically served.

The Ace in the Hole Foundation has designated the 1st Lt. Michael LiCalzi Scholarship Fund, the 2nd Tank Battalion, the United Veterans Beacon House, the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types (FIRST) and the Mary and Jim White Unit for the Care of People with Huntington’s Disease Center at ArchCare at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center as the beneficiaries of this year’s fundraising efforts. Through previous editions of the run/walk, the Ace in the Hole Foundation has raised more than $80,000 for charitable causes.

Day of event registration will be held at Lido West Town Park, 200 Lido Boulevard in Lido Beach from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The registration fee is $25 per person, with a student/child rate of $10. Active duty personnel and military veterans will be admitted free of charge. Go online to to register in advance or for more information on the run/walk. A two-mile course will be set up along the beachfront at Lido West, and participants may choose to run or walk the distance. Participants will also receive a commemorative t-shirt during a free, pre-event breakfast.

“Come down to Lido West Town Park on May 13th and join us in saluting the life and legacy of an American hero from our hometown by participating in the Ace in the Hole Foundation’s Run and Walk,” Santino said. “Thank you to the LiCalzi family for their hard work and support of our military and their families.”
