Councilwoman King Sweeney Reminds Residents Not To Forget Their Furry Friends In Winter Weather

With frigid winter temperatures appearing to be here to stay a while, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney wants to remind neighbors that man (and woman’s) best friends don’t like the freezing cold any more than we do.

Town code prohibits residents from leaving a dog unattended for more than 30 minutes in inclement weather, which includes temperatures below 32 degrees or weather that may be reasonably expected to cause suffering, disability or death to the dog.

“Our dogs are part of the family and I want to be sure that residents remember to treat them as such and bring them in from the cold,” said King Sweeney.

If you suspect a dog is being left out in unsafe conditions, please call: Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at: 516-785-5220 or Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety at: 516-538-1900. You can also call your local police precinct.
