King Sweeney: "Ride The Waves" At Hempstead Town's Lido Beach

Issued by: Council Member Erin King Sweeney

Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney is pleased to announce that surfers can now ride the waves this summer at Hempstead Town’s Lido Beach at its dedicated “surf area”  located to the right of the mushrooms by ANCHOR (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation). The new surfing area, previously known as “anchor boogie,” will be staffed and open all summer beginning on June 16.

“The surf is up at Lido Beach!” said Councilwoman King Sweeney. “Surfing has gained popularity world-wide, and the Town of Hempstead is proud to be at the forefront of increasing accessibility for surfers to enjoy their sport.”

From competitive and veteran surfers to recreational and first-timers, the new surf area will meet the needs of everyone. In past years, the area was often utilized by the ANCHOR program for surfing activities for campers.  ANCHOR is a comprehensive year-round program serving 1,200 children and adults with special needs. By opening up the area to all surfers, the town is encouraging the sport, and the tremendous benefits it provides to every enthusiast.  A dedicated surf bay has already been designated at Lido West Town Beach, where surfers can enjoy some of the best surfing in the country.

Miles of breathtaking beaches, acres of immaculate open space and dozens of vibrant parks are home to the array of leisure and entertainment options and services offered by the Town Of Hempstead’s Department of Parks and Recreation.  The park system, located on Long Island’s beautiful South Shore, is one of the largest in the United States, serving nearly 800,000 town residents each year. The department oversees more than 1,400 acres of parkland in more than 90 parks located across the township. Hundreds of certified lifeguards and staff are trained to protect and manage the town’s three miles of shoreline and 23 pool facilities.

“Surfing is among the oldest sports on earth and for many it is a way of life as much as it is a sport,” added King Sweeney.  “I encourage all of our surfers to take advantage of this new dedicated area at Hempstead Town’s beautiful Lido Beach Town Park.
