In 2012, the Hempstead Town Board launched an environmental initiative to help make our planet a healthier place for our families and future generations. The Town now offers composters and rain barrels to residents for a nominal fee. This program provides residents with an opportunity to be responsible stewards of the planet. It also serves as an educational opportunity for young people.
50-gallon rain barrels are being offered to neighbors and are designed to integrate into homeowner gutters and leaders, collecting rainwater from roofs. This water is ideal for watering gardens and lawns. During a heavy rainfall, a typical roof can provide hundreds of gallons of water. By recycling/collecting rainwater, it is estimated that tap water usage can be reduced by as much as 40% during certain periods. In addition to water conservation, rain barrel usage can help lower water bills. Using rain barrels also help reduce harmful storm runoff into area bays and waterways.
Hempstead Town’s Compost Wizard Jr. is a 7-cubic foot composter made of 100% recycled resin. The round composting drum sits on a roller base, allowing for easy turning/aeration of the organic material and more effective breakdown of leaves, grass and other composed items. Composting reduces the amount of yard waste entering landfills and returns natural nutrients to our soil. The town will provide residents with instructions for composters to help avoid pitfalls such as composting odors.
Each of these items is being offered at a minimal cost of $45. Items may be picked up at the Merrick Waste Management Facility located at 1600 Merrick Road in Merrick, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 AM and 4 PM. Proof of residency is required and payment must be made in either cash or check made payable to the Town of Hempstead. Please call (516) 378-4210 to arrange for a pickup or to obtain more information regarding composters and rain barrels.
