The Hofstra University Museum permanent collections include more than 5,000 works of art and cultural artifacts in varied media dating from the ancient to the contemporary, with a focus on American Art of the 18th - 21st century. The Museum’s mission is to “advance knowledge and understanding through experiences with authentic works of art from the world’s diverse cultures...” The Hofstra University Museum has two wheelchair accessible galleries on the south campus of Hofstra University, Emily Lowe Gallery located on South campus behind Emily Lowe Hall and David Filderman Gallery located on the 9th floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library. The Museum is open year-round and offers a variety of public programs for adults, families, seniors, and pre-K - 12th-grade classes such as free family exploration backpacks to guide adults and children as they explore sculptural works indoors and outdoors. The outdoor sculpture collection includes more than 70 works throughout the 250-acre campus and includes sculptures by Seymour Lipton, Paul Manship, and Henry Moore. Open to the public, free of charge and is handicap accessible. Included in the five exhibitions presented each year are one person and/or group exhibitions, an annual Art Faculty Exhibit, a juried Art Student Exhibit. The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery follows the academic calendar and closes for all college holidays as well as weather closings.
